I know this is backward but I just found the two sketches that led to the color version.

Magic.

For Neil.

The crows were to be involved in transporting the characters between the two worlds. I had hoped that they could appear from the ground, much like doves from a magician kerchief, with a flutter of wings, more and more of them until they formed a massive black cloud that would then disperse revealing the characters. The process would happen in reverse in the other world, with the whole flock gathering to hide the characters then disapearing into the ground like water down a drain.

A little expensive, maybe.

Flying iron.

Disaster of the digital age: I just discovered as I was uploading this image that my original file was reduced and saved by mistake from a comfortable 5100 pixels wide at 300 dpi to a whooping 750 wide at 75 dpi. Ouch. Photoshop and Painter. 2005.

Josephine's bathtub.

Sketching from a small boat, I soon discovered, was not such a good idea, even on a calm day and passing vessels added to the fun. In this area, a curiously shaped coral reef is dubbed 'Josephine's bathtub' in memory of Bonaparte's creole wife who is said to have been a regular visitor. In the middle of this very shallow outer reef, a nearly perfect circular hole carpeted in white sand looks like a giant natural hot tub. Popular with the locals.
