It's an american expression dating from the swing and boogie era, meaning things are going really well now.
You sometimes hear it as an interjection from bandleaders on old jazz dance records (Think Cab Calloway et al).
My guess is that people moving from the back country, who had been used to cooking with wood, were impressed by the efficiency and versatility of the gas appliances they found and used when they migrated to the cities.
Someone will shoot me down on that interpretation, I'm sure. :)
